After missing out on equestrian medals in the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, Denmark is hoping for a change of fortune in Hong Kong.
“Things didn’t go our way in Athens, and we are hoping we can get back on the medal rostrum in Hong Kong,’’ said Ms Ebba Bertelsen, Coach of the Para-Equestrian Team.
Denmark had won six medals – one gold, three silver and two bronze -- in Atlanta in 1996, and followed that with two silvers in Sydney in 2000.
The country’s main medal hope in the Paralympic Equestrian Events in Hong Kong is likely to be Annika Dalskov, the only rider already chosen for the four-member team.
Ms Dalskov, competing in just her second international competition, won the individual championship in Grade 3 at the 2007 World Para-Equestrian Championships held at Hartpury in England last July. She beat off strong opposition from German and British riders.
“We are hoping she will be able to repeat her fine performance at Hartpury, and be among the medal-winners here,” said Ms Bertelsen.
After touring the para-equestrian venue, facilities and the Paralympic Village with Mr Niels Christiansen, Secretary General of the Danish Paralympic Committee, Ms Bertelsen said: “Everything is looking great, and I’m sure our athletes and grooms will feel they are being very well looked after.”
Mr Christiansen, who has made several visits to inspect venues in Beijing, said Denmark will be sending a team of about 65 athletes to the Paralympic Games, and they will have support from a large group of sponsors. Members of the Danish Royal Family are also expected to attend the Games.
